The lowest risk of cardiovascular disease accrues to those who are most active.
Is There a Limit to the Cardiovascular Benefits of Exercise?
Higher levels of physical activity lower our risk of cardiovascular disease. While this is true, there remains uncertainty whether the inverse relationship between physical activity and the incidence of cardiovascular disease is more significant at the highest levels of activity. Part of the uncertainty arises out of the fact that many historic studies relied on self-reporting through questionnaires.
Accelerometers allow for a more quantitative assessment of the relationship between moderate versus vigorous activity and cardiovascular disease incidence. I want to share with you the thought-provoking results of a British study.
For this study, researchers used data from 90,211 United Kingdom Biobank participants without prior cardiovascular disease. All agreed to wear an accelerometer to measure their physical activity over seven days in 2013 through 2015.
