Reduce back pain with your mind.
As I began to write the piece you are reading, I began by checking the numbers around back pain. You can imagine my surprise when I discovered that upwards of 84 percent of adults have low back pain during their lives.
Moreover, over 85 percent of patients seen in primary care have non-specific low back pain — there is back pain with no identifiable underlying condition. Can psychological therapy provide lasting chronic pain relief? The answer appears to be yes.
I want to share with you the results of the first randomized trial of pain processing therapy. Researchers discovered that:
“Two-thirds of patients with chronic low-to-moderate back pain who received four weeks of pain processing therapy were pain-free or nearly pain-free afterward. For most, the relief lasted at least one year.”
Two-thirds of the intervention group had sustained relief, while only 20 percent of the placebo group reported prolonged relief. Psychological therapy that changes one’s beliefs about pain can provide long-lasting relief and change brain regions related to pain.
