MASKS AND COVID19: Do you know how effective your mask is against COVID-19? A new study from the University of Göttingen and Cornell University discovered that wearing a face mask — even if it doesn’t fit perfectly — is even more protective against COVID-19 than is social distancing.
Social distancing, no mask
Examining seven adults wearing a face mask, scientists had subjects breathe through their noses. The subjects wore no masks but socially distanced up to ten feet. After being exposed to a typical COVID-19 viral load, the study participants had an up to 90 percent risk for infection after a few minutes.
Mask
Wearing a face mask dropped infection risk quite significantly. With a surgical mask, the upper bound of infection reaches 90 percent after 30 minutes; an FFP2 mask remains at roughly 20 percent even after an hour.
