Why Your Brain Feels Off Lately
Recently, I’ve noticed something strange—not just in my patients, but in myself.
People who used to feel sharp, focused, and mentally clear are now struggling with something harder to name:
- Scattered thinking
- Brain fog
- Constant low-grade fatigue
- An inability to truly rest, even after sleep
As a cancer doctor, I hear these complaints from high-achieving, motivated individuals. These aren’t people with diagnosed neurological conditions. They’re executives, students, athletes, and parents. And yet, something’s shifted.
I believe it’s not just stress or burnout. The modern world—fast, noisy, and always on—has disrupted something fundamental in our brains.

Why Your Brain Feels Off Lately
What’s happening?
A key culprit may be the disruption of the brain’s default mode network, the part responsible for introspection, creativity, and memory consolidation. When we constantly multitask, scroll, and react, we never let this network activate. The result? Mental exhaustion and a strange sense of disconnection from ourselves.
I’ve written a new essay about this phenomenon—what I’m seeing in my clinic, what neuroscience tells us, and most importantly, what can help.
In the piece, I share five habits I now recommend to patients (and practice myself) to restore cognitive clarity and emotional balance. No supplements or expensive retreats—just small, sustainable shifts.
If your brain has been feeling “off,” you’re not imagining it. And you’re not alone.

This essay isn’t about productivity hacks. It’s about healing your brain and reclaiming your ability to think clearly again.
