What Rome, Singapore, and Malaysia Taught Me About Time — And the Life I Almost Missed
As a physician, I’ve spent much of my life racing the clock — clinic schedules, treatment timelines, and the relentless pressure to do more, faster. But during a recent journey through Rome, Singapore, and Malaysia, something shifted. I stopped seeing time as the enemy. I began to see it as a companion.
This essay is not a travel guide.
It’s a meditation on how three very different places taught me to live more deeply.
In Rome, I found peace among ruins. I stood beneath the oculus of the Pantheon, sunlight tracing my face, and felt the strange comfort of impermanence. History slept beneath my feet, and for once, I let it slow me down.

In Singapore, I discovered stillness beneath precision. The city moved like a machine, but even machines have heartbeats. I found them in the quiet waterfronts, in the ritual of kopi O at hawker stalls, and in the rare stillness of empty streets at midnight.
And in Malaysia — especially in Kuching and by jungle rivers — I learned that time can unfold like a story, shared not spent. Here, strangers smiled without expectation. Conversations stretched without an agenda. I sat by the river and watched lanterns drift into the dark, no longer needing a reason to be still.
Each place offered something: a way to reframe the pace of life.
This essay reflects on what it means to be truly present and how we often miss the most meaningful moments chasing things we never needed in the first place.
It’s for anyone who has ever felt rushed, disconnected, or unsure how to slow down.
Maybe time isn’t something to master.
Maybe it’s something to walk beside.
