Improve your cholesterol.
A diet hack. That’s what I want to give you today. There is a straightforward maneuver you can do to lower your total and LDL cholesterol potentially. Here’s one hint: We have long known that consuming nuts is associated with lower chances of having a heart attack or stroke.
Dr. Emilio Ros, director of the Lipid Clinic, Endocrinology and Nutrition Service at Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, and colleagues conducted a randomized clinical trial. Could a walnut-supplemented diet improve health?
The participants received either a walnut-free or a walnut-supplemented diet. The researchers tracked compliance, medicine changes (including drugs targeting cholesterol), body weight, and tolerance through visits every two months. At each visit, the researchers provided raw, pieced walnuts to those in the walnut-supplemented group.
Researchers assigned the two groups to either daily inclusion of 56 grams of walnuts or complete avoidance of walnuts for 6 months. After 3 months, the researchers reversed the intervention.
Let’s look at the results. The subjects had an average age of 69 years, and two-thirds of the participants were women. One-third were on statin drugs for elevated cholesterol.
