THE EGG DIET IS A WEIGHT-LOSS PROGRAM that typically involves consuming a large number of hard-boiled eggs as a primary protein source. The weird egg diet is trending on Tik Tok is weird, but does it work?
The quick answer? No. Dietitians warn that the weight loss approach doesn’t offer enough nutrients or calories. They encourage medical professionals to chat with their patients about how social media influences their eating habits.
Noise proves nothing. Often a hen who has merely laid an egg cackles as if she laid an asteroid. — Mark Twain
What is the egg diet?
The egg diet is a weight-loss diet that typically involves consuming a high number of eggs as the primary source of protein.
There are different variations of the egg diet. Still, most typically involve eating a combination of eggs, lean proteins, non-starchy vegetables, and healthy fats while restricting or eliminating carbohydrates, processed foods, and sugar.
In some versions of the egg diet, you may eat up to six eggs a day, along with some non-starchy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, or kale. You may also include healthy fats such as avocado or olive oil. Some diet versions also allow for lean proteins such as chicken, fish, or turkey.
TikTok’s new weight-loss trend appears promising. This so-called egg diet uses a 10-day, low-calorie meal plan that predominantly consists of eggs and tea.
Various TikTokers have taken different takes on the diet. Here is one popular meal plan:
- Breakfast: Three hard-boiled eggs washed down with green tea
- Lunch: Three hard-boiled eggs plus an apple
- Dinner: Oatmeal, again washed down with green tea
Is the egg diet a good idea?
In short, there are better ideas than the egg diet. First, it is not sustainable and could jeopardize a follower’s health. In essence, this diet is a calorie deprivation one.
Certified eating disorders specialist and supervisor Monika Ostroff, LICSW, CEDS-S, explains that “asking an adult body to function on one-third or less of what a body needs is disrespectful of the body.”
Strict adherence to an egg diet might lead to malnutrition, brain fog, impaired organ function, energy depletion, and an increased risk of suffering from an eating disorder. Moreover, the diet may slow metabolism, interfering with sustainable weight loss.
Finally, this fad diet is not a healthy or sustainable approach to long-term weight loss. It would be better to consume a balanced diet that incorporates a variety of foods from all food groups. Several are useful for enhancing health, including a Mediterranean-style one.
Eggs can be a nutritious meal addition or snack, but eating only eggs is a bad idea. Instead, eat well to optimize your health and well-being. Before you embark on your weight loss journey, please talk with a healthcare professional.
