We all do it, but few like to discuss it. Is your poop predicting your death?
Yes, I’m talking about poop.
But what if I told you that your bathroom habits could be a window into your overall health?
It might sound surprising, but the truth is that doctors have long recognized a connection between our bowel movements and the risk of serious diseases like cancer and heart disease.
What’s the frequency and form of your stool that says something about your well-being?
Let’s dive into the fascinating and often overlooked world of poop and uncover what it might be revealing about your health.
“If aliens are watching us through telescopes, they’re going to think the dogs are the leaders of the planet. If you see two life forms, one of them’s making a poop, the other one’s carrying it for him, who would you assume is in charge?” — Jerry Seinfeld
Your Bowel Movements Say A Lot About Your Health
Did you know that your stool caliber, frequency, and other characteristics can be harbingers of serious disease?
Cancer.
Heart disease.
And more.
My message today is simple:
Noticing patterns in your bowel habits may hold secrets to optimizing your health and longevity.
A New Bowel Movement Study
Researchers in China wanted to see if how often you poop and what your poop looks like is linked to how likely you are to die from any cause, like cancer or heart disease.
They examined health information collected from 2005 to 2010 from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
Study Results: Stool Frequency Matters
Here are the findings:
This study found that people who poop less often than once a day have a higher risk of dying from any cause.
Specifically, those who poop only once a week have a 1.4 times higher risk of early death compared to those who poop once a day.
Even pooping six times a week was associated with a five percent increased risk of premature death.
More Study Details: Stool Consistency Matters
The study also found that the consistency of stool matters. Having soft stools four times a week was associated with a much higher risk of death:
- All-cause mortality: 78 percent higher risk
- Death from cancer: 142 percent higher risk
- Death from cardiovascular disease: 127 percent higher risk
This research suggests that both the frequency and consistency of bowel movements can provide important clues about overall health.
Final Thoughts
Listen to the study authors:
“Infrequent soft stools were associated with a higher risk of all-cause, cancer, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, while regular or moderately frequent hard stools may contribute to a higher risk of CVD mortality.”
Self-monitoring stool consistency and frequency is a simple but valuable tool for informing ourselves about possible chronic diseases.
Finally, consume more fiber to increase the bulk of your stool.
