Today, I focus on maximizing movement-related heart benefits with minimal time.
What if you could reduce your heart disease risk with a workout that fits into the time it takes to brush your teeth?
I know.
It sounds too good to be true.
Especially to a gym rat like me.
Enter a groundbreaking study that reveals how “exercise snacking” can improve cardiovascular health.
Note: The physical activity needs to be vigorous.

Vigorous Intermittent Exercise Benefits Women
Let’s get quickly to the actionable results of a recent University of Sydney (Australia) study:
Researchers linked very small amounts of vigorous intermittent physical activity to a much lower risk of heart problems, including heart attacks and heart failure.
Most bursts of exercise were short, lasting under a minute, and only a few were longer than 2 minutes.
These positive results appeared among women who didn’t regularly exercise.
Sex Differences – Maximizing Heart Benefits with Minimal Time
This study found that women who did short bursts of intense exercise, even for less than 2 minutes a day, had a lower risk of heart problems like heart attacks and heart failure.

The more of these short bursts they did, the lower their risk.
Interestingly, this was mostly true for women. While men also saw some benefit from short bursts of exercise, it wasn’t as strong or clear.
Why Are The Benefits More Clear for Women?
Why are the benefits of exercise bursts more clear for women than men?
The researchers noticed something interesting: when women did these short bursts of exercise, they seemed to work harder than men.
They measured people’s effort by examining their “VO2 max,” which shows how efficiently their bodies use oxygen during exercise.
Women averaged 83 percent of their VO2 max during these short bursts, while men averaged 71 percent.
This difference means the women were pushing themselves closer to their maximum capacity.

My Thoughts: Maximizing Heart Benefits with Minimal Time
This report is the third time these international researchers have shown how good short bursts of intense exercise can be for you.
They’re challenging the idea that exercise has to be at least 10 minutes long to be worthwhile.
Not all of us can do vigorous activity.
But for those who are able, the entry level is low.
No special clothing.
No expenditures.
Minimal time commitment.
Do you intersperse exercise throughout your day?
