How “Just Enough” Leads to a Better Life

March 2, 2025 · In: Lifestyle, philosophy, stress, Wellness

Today, I want to focus on how “just enough” leads to a better life.

Scandinavia has a well-earned reputation for being one of the happiest regions in the world.

The residents there seem to have a unique way of life emphasizing balance, connection, and a healthy work-life balance.

This approach to life has led to a culture of less stress, more time for enjoyment, and a higher standard of living.

One of the Scandinavian philosophies that has gained popularity in recent years is Lagom.

Lagom is a Swedish word that means “just right” or “not too much and not too little.”

Practitioners apply a philosophy of moderation and balance to all areas of life.

Goals – How “Just Enough” Leads to a Better Life

In this brief post, I will explore the Lagom philosophy and how it can help you live a happier and more fulfilling life.

I will also discuss other Scandinavian philosophies contributing to the region’s high happiness levels.

What is Lagom?

Lagom is a Swedish word that means “just right” or “not too much and not too little.”

It is a philosophy of moderation and balance that can be applied to all areas of life.

The Lagom philosophy is based on balancing work and play, giving and receiving, and having and not having, which are important.

It is about finding the sweet spot where you are not lacking anything but also not overwhelmed by excess.

How Can Lagom Help You Live a Happier Life?

There are many ways that the Lagom philosophy can help you live a happier life.

Here are a few examples:

  • Reduce stress: Living a more balanced life can reduce stress levels and improve physical and mental health.
  • Increase your satisfaction: When you have everything you need, you are more likely to be satisfied with your life.
  • Improve your relationships: The Lagom philosophy also involves finding balance in relationships, which can lead to stronger and more fulfilling ones.
  • Increase your productivity: You are more likely to be productive when you are not overwhelmed by work or other commitments.
  • Improve your overall well-being: Living a more balanced life can improve your well-being.

Other Scandinavian Philosophies

In addition to Lagom, several other Scandinavian philosophies may contribute to the region’s high happiness levels.

These philosophies include:

  • Hygge: Hygge is a Danish word that means “coziness” or “comfort.” It is the art of creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
  • Friluftsliv is a Norwegian word meaning “open-air living.” It is the practice of spending time in nature.
  • Sysselsättning: Sysselsättning is a Swedish word meaning “occupation” or “pursuit.” It suggests that everyone should have a hobby or passion.

My Final Thoughts — How “Just Enough” Leads to a Better Life

Scandinavian philosophies can be valuable tools for anyone who wants to improve their quality of life.

These philosophies can help us create a more balanced and fulfilling life.
You may be surprised at how much happier you feel as a result.

Are these philosophies the keys to happiness?

I can’t say, but they can help you and improve your lifestyle.

I hope this blog post has inspired you to learn more about Scandinavian philosophies and find ways to incorporate them into your life.

Contentment in satisfaction.
