Plenty of research links meditation with lower anxiety — but what is happening in the brain? The region that switches on when we feel anxious is called the posterior cingulate cortex. When that anxiety quiets down, the anterior cingulate cortex becomes active. MRI scans reveal that meditation actually engages and strengthens this area of the brain.
