Each day, I take steps to protect my long-term health and well-being. For me, that means heading to the gym. But must we run a marathon or hit the gym to sharpen our brain health?

Head to the places where you unwind and enjoy yourself. Just be sure to move your whole body. I treasure walking through the lovely Puget Sound region, letting my eyes rest on water or trees. I don't just look forward to it; I make it a daily priority. So why should you keep moving as well?

The rewards go beyond the physical. Staying active helps you keep a healthy brain; it boosts blood flow and metabolism. Your insulin sensitivity gets better, and the structure and function of your brain may genuinely improve! So go for a hike, try yoga, hop on that stationary recumbent bike, or take a swim. It doesn't take much to boost your health and well-being in both the physical and psychological realms. And if you can find a way to connect with others, you may further support your cognitive functions (Improve Your Brain Function): Isolation has been linked to a host of harmful health effects, including cognitive decline. I'm Dr. Michael Hunter.

I earned my undergraduate degree from Harvard, my medical degree from Yale, and finished a radiation oncology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. I have been honored to be named a “top doctor” in Seattle Magazine, US News & World Report, Seattle Metropolitan Magazine, 425 Magazine, and WA magazine. Readers of the Kirkland Advertiser have voted me the top doctor (in any field) in the region on multiple occasions. I care for people with cancer at Evergreen Hospital, just outside Seattle. And now the fine print: Nothing provided here should replace the sound judgment of your trusted health care provider. Thank you.
