Slow Telomere Shortening Through Lifestyle

September 15, 2026 Comments Off on Slow Telomere Shortening Through Lifestyle

Telomere length is associated with health and life longevity. Lifestyle changes can affect our telomere length. Slow telomere shortening through lifestyle.

Telomeres are regions of repeated nucleotide sequences at the end of a chromosome. Telomeres help protect your cells from deterioration and from inappropriate interactions with nearby chromosomes. In humans, the average telomere length drops by about 11 kilobases at birth to fewer than 4 kilobases in old age. This decline is greater among men than in women.

There is emerging evidence that we can affect telomere length through lifestyle. Telomeres are the caps on the ends of our chromosomes. The length of the telomeres is associated with longevity and health. Telomere length shrinks with each cell division. A growing body of evidence suggests that we may slow telomere shortening through lifestyle, including:

  • exercise
  • mindfulness
  • diet
