Brain aging – Do This to Slow it Down
Did you know that optimizing your blood pressure may help your brain stay at least six months younger than your actual age? This observation is according to new research from The Australian National University.
Study participants who had high blood pressure had older (and less healthy) brains. The researchers believe that this finding increases the risk of stroke and dementia.
The study authors note that normal blood pressure is less than 120/80. Healthier blood pressure is approximately 110/70.
What is particularly relevant to most of this is the observation by Professor Nicolas Cherbuin: “This thinking that one’s brain becomes unhealthy because of high blood pressure later in life is not completely true.”
He continues: “[The brain becoming unhealthy] starts earlier and starts in people who have normal blood pressure.”
The Australia National University team and colleagues elsewhere in Australia, New Zealand, and Germany looked at more than 2,000 brain scans of 686 healthy individuals ages 44 to 76.
The participants had measures of their blood pressure up to four times over 12 years. Researchers used blood pressure measurements and brain scans to determine brain age, a measure of brain health.
