Digital mammography offers real advantages, yet a longer life does not seem to be among them — at least when measured against conventional film-based mammograms.
The goal of a mammogram is to find breast cancer while it is still early, before it has a chance to travel to distant organs. For screening the general population, it remains the most reliable option we have.
A mammogram is an X-ray image of the breast. In the past, those images were captured on film — a method called film mammography — much like an old-fashioned photograph. As computer technology advanced, a newer technique known as digital mammography came into use.
