Digital mammograms have benefits, but improved survival does not appear to be one of them (at least as compared with traditional film-based mammograms).
Mammograms aim to catch breast cancer in an early stage, before it can spread to distant parts of the body. For screening the general population, they remain the best tool.
Mammograms are X-ray pictures of a breast. Historically, these images were stored on film, in a process known as film mammography. Something akin to taking a photograph. With innovations in computer technology, a newer approach called digital mammography has emerged.
