Sexuality and cancer. Yes, that is the subject of my communication with you today. More specifically, we’ll look at sex and risk-raising human papillomavirus (or HPV). HPV is the leading cause of infection-related cancer. This virus can raise the risk of several cancers, including anal, penile, vulvar, cervix, and head and neck cancer (oropharyngeal cancer, or cancer of the tonsils, base of tongue, or back wall of the upper throat).

Let’s explore how one gets the virus, the cancers that increase in risk when HPV is present, and how you can reduce your risk. Fortunately, while the vast majority of us will have HPV sometime in our lifetime, it is uncommonly associated with cancer.
